Weekly Chamber Update 5-23-13



Hello this is Wendi Bailey your Toccoa-Stephens County Chamber of Commerce President with your Weekly Chamber Update! 

Well we’ve had 2 major events back-to-back and here are the results.

First, last Friday was The North Georgia Credit Union Chamber Golf Classic at the Currahee Club. Congratulations to our winners: 1st Place was North Georgia Credit Union, 2nd Place was Sanders, Rank & Smith and 3rd Place was North East Georgia Bank. 

Yesterday, the Chamber’s Annual Meeting and Awards Ceremony with key note Speaker, Dink NeSmith was held to celebrate our member’s successes and install our new slate of officers including our new Chairman Brian Akin of North Georgia Credit Union. 

Here are the Business-of-the-Year Awards: Service and Professional is Sander’s Drugs; Retail is Java Station; Tourism is Georgia Baptist Conference Center; non-Profit is Evan Oglesby Foundation; Senior is Jonsey Haygood, Youth is Bailey Taylor; Volunteer is Linda Scofield, Industry is Global Partitions/Gem Southeast, Partner-in-Education is Ebenezer Baptist Church, Entrepreneur is The Cornerstone Restaurant/X-Factor Bar & Grill.

The Business Plan Competition produced a tie between The Dance Studio and The Lan. The Chairman’s Award went to Anne Shurley of the Currahee Club.

And finally, Judge Robert Struble, recognized as one of the greatest Superior Court Judges to have ever served NE Georgia, is the recipient of this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Congratulations to all our outstanding Chamber members & businesses!

I have a few announcements for you:

TODAY we are celebrating with State Farm Frank Worley’s office-on Big A Road, in recognition of his 40 years in business! Frank is having an open house from 11am to 5pm, with free hot dogs at lunch and refreshments throughout the day.  From 5pm to 6:30pm we’ll have a Business-After-Hours there. Frank is featuring a variety of Georgia cheeses made by farmers in our state. The Jack Pot is up to $100 and you must be present to win!

Save-the-date for the Georgia Mountains Farm Tour on June 15th & 16th, with 16 farms to visit including our very own Taylor Creek Farms. Tickets are on sale now in the Welcome Center.

Save the date for the NEGA Employer’s Seminar on Thursday June 13th, offering valuable training for HR, Supervisors and business owners. There is a complimentary afternoon session on the Affordable Care Act. Please call the Chamber for a complete schedule at 706-886-2132.

The “Irish Splendor” meeting is Thursday, May 9th at 5:30pm in the Chamber Office. The Chamber and Ionosphere Travel have organized an 8 day community travel trip to Ireland this November 13-20. The deadline for savings is Monday May 13th! Book now and save $250 per person. The 16th Annual Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament is Friday May 17th at Currahee Club on the Jim Fazio designed Rolex World’s Top 1,000 golf course. Our presenting sponsor is North Georgia Credit Union and Golf Committee Chair is Corey Shiflet of NEGA Bank. There’s still time to promote your business with a hole sign on the tee box, in the golfer’s gift bags or be a volunteer on the course.   

The Chamber’s 67th Annual Meeting and Awards Program is set for Wednesday May 22ndat the Georgia Baptist Conference Center. Our Guest Speaker is Mr. Dink Nesmith, President of Community Newspapers, Inc. and Chair of the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia. Our members have voted for their favorite people, businesses and industry to recognize and reward - and, we’ll install our new Board of Directors. Past Chamber Chairman Barry Roberts is the current Chair of Toccoa-Stephens County Tomorrow and has led the community visioning effort along with the University of Georgia’s Fanning Institute. Mr. Roberts will present the common community vision of the future of Toccoa-Stephens County at the Annual Meeting. Call or come by the Chamber to make your reservation today.

Hello this is Wendi Bailey, your T-SC CoC President with your Weekly Chamber Update.

The next Irish Splendor Presentation is Thursday, May 9th at 5:30pm in the Chamber Office. The Chamber partnered with Ionosphere Travel to organize an 8 day community travel trip to Ireland this November 13-20. The first deadline for savings is Monday May 13th! Book now and save $250 per person. 

The trip includes 8 days and 9 meals and visits to Ireland’s main attractions. The fees include transportation to and from the ATL airport. Rates begin at $2,519 per person and we need your deposit now secure your seat. Deposits are refundable through June 14thand the final payment is due September 14.
