Our Economic Development Committee is planning a Business Plan Competition. Entrepreneurs will be invited to compete to win “start-up” business services and support - to put into operation a for-profit business in Toccoa-Stephens County. VOLUNTEER IN THE WELCOME CENTER
The new year is also a great time to think about giving back to your community. Stephens County is known for its hospitality - and we need new, friendly faces - to staff the Welcome Center. Come make new friends - and help our visitors find what they are looking for.
COATS FOR KIDS
The Welcome Center is collecting new or gently used, warm, winter coats - to keep the students of Stephens county warm throughout the winter. Help us help our kids - by making a donation – the deadline is January 14th.

Wednesday the 15th the Chamber has invited the Senior Sector of our membership to come have Chili with the Chairman – Lee Hicks, from 11am to 1pm, in the Mitchell Allen Room at the train depot. We look forward to sharing information - and insights - over a hearty meal.
Thursday the 16th there is a Business Spotlight on SAGE Automotive Interiors, from 11am to 1am at their location on SR 17. We look forward to touring their facility and learning more about this industry and their associates.

Annual School System Report, Holiday Hot Deals, Web Site and Online Marketing Strategies Class
ONE - The Chamber’s Education Committee is Chaired by Greg Roach of North Georgia Technical College and Co-Chaired by Barry Roberts of Global Partitions.
The committee provides opportunities for member businesses - to build relationships with our schools - through the Partners-in-Education program - where businesses become vested and invested in our schools and school board - by volunteering time, money and expertise.
They are inviting you to attend the upcoming - Stephens County School System Annual Report Forum -to hear from our School Superintendent-Sherrie Whiten on our Schools System’s academic achievements - and future initiatives.
The Forum is set for Tuesday, November 16th at the North Georgia Technical College Currahee Campus from 11:00am – 1:00pm. Doors open at 10:30am.
Lunch will be served by Cabe Crest Catering - the cost is $8 for pre-registered guests and $10 for day-of registration. Please call the Chamber at 706-886-2132 to register and become a partner in education.

2010 Successful Currahee Military Weekend Celebration
Weekly Chamber Update October 7, 2010
The Toccoa-Stephens County Chamber of Commerce, Historical Society and the City Main Street program want to congratulate the community on making the 8th Annual Currahee Military reunion and weekend a huge success.
Together we "rolled out the red carpet" for the Camp Toccoa Veterans, the Fort Campbell spouses of the current deployed soldiers, and all our visitors. It was a memorable weekend to honor the men of Camp Toccoa and show appreciation for our military’s commitment to our country.
The event also served to teach WWII history through the Veteran and Re-enactor school visits as well as Carl Fennell’s event logo - depicting the four regiments who trained at Camp Toccoa.
All reports indicate there was record participation in the weekend activities. And businesses benefited from the great success.
There were over 65 sponsors recognized and hundreds of volunteers who support the 11 activities during the Currahee Military Weekend Celebration.
It took our entire community – City, County, Education, Civic, Business and Ministerial sectors to make this event successful. The Planning Committee’s future goal is to continue to grow this event to successfully recreate the authentic Camp Toccoa Town.
Event t-shirts are still available for purchase at the Currahee Military Museum Gift Shop. Also, the Chamber is requesting photos and weekend stories be submitted and shared at the Welcome Center and Chamber Office. Mark your calendars for the 2011 event on September 30–October 2, 2011.

The Government Affairs Committee of the Toccoa-Stephens County Chamber of Commerce & WNEG Radio are sponsoring a Political Forum prior to the November 2nd General Election on Thursday, October 7th at the Stephens County Historical Court House, upstairs Court Room, downtown Toccoa at 7:00 p.m. The public is invited to attend and if you arriving by 6:30pm, you will be given the opportunity to submit written questions to the Moderator.
Confirmed candidates include: for County Commissioner Post 1 – Commissioner Harold Andrews (Incumbent) & Ms. Michelle Jamieson; for Georgia House of Representatives District 28 - Representative Michael Harden (Incumbent) & Mr. Chris Irvin; and for the 10th U.S. Congressional District candidate Mr. Russell Edwards will attend and have an opportunity to introduce himself and answer questions.
The forum will be broadcast live over WNEG’s web site, www.wnegradio.com, right after “Crunch-time.” Then, it will re-play on AM630 radio next Tuesday, October 12th at 5:30p.m.

Currahee Military Weekend Itinerary
The Currahee Military Reunion Weekend Celebration is here! Pull out your American flags and your red, white and blue and let’s celebrate our Camp Toccoa Veterans. Here is your weekend itinerary:
Start by attending the Chamber BBQ lunch on Friday from 11:30-1:30pm at the First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. After that you can wander over to the Train Depot for the Veteran’s book signing and autograph session. Then put on your 40’s outfits and head to the Airport’s old LeTourneau Hanger for the USO Hangar Dance.
But don’t stay up too late - because you will need to wake up early to run or walk the Currahee Challenge – that’s 3 miles up and 3 miles down. Hurry home to shower and then head downtown to see the Parachute Team jump at 10:25 - to start the Veteran’s parade. After that – walk to the depot to attend the Opening Ceremony and the dedication of the Loden Exhibit Hall.
By then you will be really hungry so have a nice big lunch and get your energy back up to tour the Currahee Military Museum, the 2 Memorabilia Shows on Doyle - and the Re-enactor Camp site on the Courthouse Lawn. They will be doing weapons demonstrations on the hour. Don’t miss it!
After that, head out to the airport for a once in a lifetime chance to purchase a ride in one of the Vintage WWII aircraft or the Huey Helicopter. The airport show will last until 4pm. Then go home to get your dress clothes on and get over to the Georgia Baptist Conference Center for a nice dinner and hear Camp Toccoa Veteran Carl Beck speak.
Rise early again - for the Sunday morning Remembrance Service at 8:30 at the Camp Toccoa Memorial - given by Norman Parrish with William Tucker blowing Taps and the re-enactors performing a 21 gun salute.

In 1942 with the world at war, the United States government acquired a mountain and the surrounding land in Toccoa, Georgia as a training facility for a new type of soldier, the paratrooper. Young men from across the nation who had little in common except a shared future, descended on the small north Georgia town to train to defend their country.
To honor the men of Camp Toccoa and as a show of appreciation for the sacrifices they made, the Currahee Military Weekend and Reunion is set for the weekend of Oct. 1-3. The event is hosted by The Toccoa-Stephens County Chamber of Commerce, Stephens County Historical Society and Toccoa Mainstreet Program.
It is estimated that as many as 17,000 soldiers from the 501st, 506th, 511th, 517th Parachute Infantry Regiments trained at Camp Toccoa during WWII. With the paratrooper population being greater than the town’s population, one can imagine the impact of the soldiers on the community. The once sleepy town was now a booming military town and quickly became a regional financial, medical and transportation hub for northeast Georgia.
Camp Toccoa reshaped the town and the soldiers training there ultimately became the inspiration for the Home Box Office mini-series The Band of Brothers, movies Saving Private Ryan and The Dirty Dozen as well as the History Channel’s Los Banos Prison Raid.
“We look forward to the paratroopers who trained at Camp Toccoa and their families coming back to Toccoa for the reunion to reminisce about their experiences with their friends who shared this very significant time in their lives,” says Brenda Carlan, County and Currahee Military Museum Executive Director. “New this year Witness to War project will be here to interview WWII veterans. We are accepting appointments now to preserve their stories and unique experiences. “
“Visitors can meet some of the paratroopers who trained at Camp Toccoa and listen to their stories. There are ten Camp Toccoa Veterans registered to return this year. Scheduled Events with the Veterans include school visits, a book signing with Jake McNiece of the 506th author of The Filthy 13. There will also be a Veterans’ Parade, Opening Ceremonies and a Banquet with special guest speaker Carl Beck, WWII Camp Toccoa Veteran. Guests can also visit the Currahee Military Museum and walk through the actual stable that housed some of the soldiers while they were fighting in Aldbourne, England. We look forward to honoring the men of Camp Toccoa again this year.”
Chamber of Commerce President Wendi Bailey says the military weekend is one of the most important events for the town and serves to create community pride. “We are thrilled about this year’s t-shirt design created by local artist Carl Fennell exclusively for the Weekend. It is sure to be a collector’s item and will teach WWII history, as it displays each of the four regimen emblems who trained at Camp Toccoa, 501st, 506th, 511th and 517th,“ said Wendi. “There are a number of activities planned including a BBQ, a Hangar Dance and the famous Currahee Challenge Run/Walk “3 Miles Up-3 Miles Down” Currahee Mountain which served as the paratroopers’ base camp and training facility. There will also be an Airport Show with a Parachute Jump Team and a once in a lifetime opportunity to recreate history by purchasing a ride in one of the vintage WWII aircraft flown by the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Dixie Wing and the Army Aviation Heritage Foundation.”
The majority of the weekend’s events will take place in close proximity to the historic district of downtown Toccoa where the Chamber of Commerce, Welcome Center and Historical Society and Currahee Military Museum are all housed in a historic, restored train depot.
“This event is a great opportunity to showcase our award winning downtown revitalization as well as thank the downtown merchants and restaurants for being there,” said Main Street Events Coordinator, Sharon Crosby. “There will be re-enactor encampments on the courthouse lawn where visitors can experience a WWII camp site and living history exhibits,” said Sharon. “There will also be military recruiters, military vehicles and a memorabilia show and sale with items from the Civil War, Indian Wars, WWI and WWII. There will be something for kids of all ages as we celebrate our military’s commitment to America.”

• 7:00am: Day of Registration for the Currahee Challenge Run/Walk: 3 Mile at 7:45am and 6 Mile at 8:30am. Come run the infamous Currahee Mountain trail, “3 miles up - 3 miles down,” that served as part of the rigorous basic training where the men were hardened to become battle-ready paratroopers. 1st, 2nd 3rd prizes are matted weekend art suitable for framing. Fee is $15 in advance and $20 race day registration.

LEARN HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR CHAMBER MEMBERSHIP
Here are a couple of questions and common misconceptions about your Chamber membership.
Q. I don’t “get anything” our of the Chamber Membership. It does not benefit me in any way.
A: It is important to ask yourself what it is that you expect to “get out of the Chamber and how you define benefit. Most people have varying expectations when they join the Chamber but it is important to think of membership as an investment in your business, not as an expense. We believe that – as with anything – you will only get out of it that which you put into it! Joining the Chamber is similar to joining the gym; the mere act of joining does not automatically mean you will lose those extra 20 pounds. It is essential to have a plan and follow it consistently to realize the results you are hoping for. Just as the gym provides an energizing atmosphere, proper equipment, diverse classes and members with a common goal, the Chamber offers diverse networking venues, promotional benefits, camaraderie, and opportunities to meet hundreds of like-minded business people. What you choose to do with these resources and how much you decide to utilize them is up to you. While what you may “get” out of the chamber may not be exactly what another member “gets,” everyone benefits from belonging to the Chamber. While the referral benefit may be of greater value to an event planner than say a manufacturer in the Industrial Park, so too is the annual lobbying for a single tax rate much more important to the manufacturer than it is to the freelance artist. And so on….

A: With only 24 hours in a day, it is indeed a challenge to manage both our professional and personal lives. But how we schedule and manage our days is our choice. Opportunities are available in the morning, evening and occasionally at lunch. Again if you were to join a gym and never go, would you expect to be physically fit after a year? And remember, attending events is not the only way to utilize your membership. Submit an article for the Investment Report, place a piece in the Chamber Pak, join a committee, etc.

2010 Governor's Conference on Tourism
We attended the Governor’s Conference on Tourism this week with over 400+ other professionals responsible for destination marketing. The Senate and House Joint Committee on Economic Development and Tourism - along with the Secretary of State and the Governor attended to brief us on tourism success stories across Georgia.
We learned from the experts how to take our Social Media to the next level including best practices for creating your business web site, and Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube accounts. We are bringing this technology home to our members and are planning a class this month. The education seminar is titled “Web Site & Social Media Strategies” and the objectives are to assist you with - 1) reviewing web site options, 2) getting lots of fans on Facebook and 3) and getting good reviews to drive sales.
Second, we learned about the importance of hospitality and the tourist’s experience. When visitors come into our Community, the Welcome Center or your business, they may not remember your name or what you said but they will remember how they were treated. The Chamber offers Hospitality Training for our new Welcome Center Volunteers and would be happy to include sales associates from your businesses, too. Also, we offer a Secret Shopper program and can come to your business, assess the level of hospitality and report back to you.
Finally, we learned the importance of partnerships and collaboration. The Chamber has a Tourism Committee that meets the 2nd Friday of every month - and partners closely with the Toccoa Mainstreet Program to promote Tourism. Also, we are members of the Georgia Mountain Travel Association and the Lake Hartwell Marketing Alliance.
We are now calling on all our partners and associations and alliances to help us promote the upcoming Currahee Military Weekend October 1st-3rd. The mission is to preserve WWII history - and honor our veterans. It is also to share our history and heritage with about 2,500 visitors. Tourism is economic development!

The inaugural Triple Crown Watercross Competition on Lake Hartwell was held August 13-15th at the Big Oaks Recreation Area in Hart County. Over 150 watercraft racers participated and spectators came by car and boat - about 2,500 on Saturday and 3,000 on Sunday, to see speed and stunts. Rob Flores from Las Vegas and Ermino Iantosca from Naples were two points leaders racing to qualify for the upcoming nationals.
Mainstreet Director Connie Tabor and Chamber of Commerce President Wendi Bailey both serve on the Lake Hartwell Marketing Alliance (LHMA) board along with other lake-surrounding county’s representatives from Franklin, Hart, Anderson, Pickens and Oconee. The LHMA successfully attracted the Watercross event to the Lake and the board as well as many volunteers organized the weekend activities.
The riders each received Lake Hartwell gift bags at registration with gift items and brochures from each of the counties. All reports indicate they loved the warm weather, deep water and Southern hospitality. It was the perfect environment for the first event of its kind in the southeast!
The PR and media coverage leading up to and during the event, including ESPN brought great visibility to our Lake Hartwell region. WNEG TV News Channel 32, WNEG Radio AM 630 and Advantage Cable Marketing sponsored the event by running commercials created by Good Machine. Riders and spectators came from all over including Canada and Germany. They ate food from Shirley’s Sole Food, heard music from Flash the DJ and learned about the region by visiting the county’s information booths.
T-SC volunteers included Peter and Wendi Bailey, David and Lynn Cox, Harry and Patti Joiner, Don and Connie Tabor and Jackie Whitmire. They helped share information about our T-SC attractions and upcoming events. “Many of the riders are staying in the region before leaving for Charleston, West Virginia for the next race,” said Connie Tabor Mainstreet Director, “we invited them to visit Toccoa-Stephens County attractions, restaurants and retail shops this week.”
On Friday, the counties and sponsors each entered a team of amateurs in the Corporate Challenge. The Toccoa-Stephens County team placed 4th out of 11 teams. Mike Haynie from 1st Franklin Financial Corporation had the fastest team time of 1:07, Peter Bailey, Wendi Bailey and Roger Guimond each had times of 1:08. The Mayor of Hartwell, Jennifer Scott had the overall fastest time of 1:04.
On Saturday, nine types of Riders (beginner to pro) on four types of watercrafts (seated or standing) competed in four types of classes (stock to modified) and five different events (endurance, drag racing to freestyle tricks). Each race begins with 20 racers, male and female, side-by-side all wanting to be first going into turn one.
Upstate Watercraft Promotions, the national promoter partnering with the International Jet Sports Boating Association is looking at venues in Anderson, SC for the 2011 event. Organizers believe it will continue to grow and be an economic boost for the Lake Hartwell region for years to come. “We are excited about the future of the LHMA and the other events being contemplated now, said Wendi Bailey Chamber President. “Tourists don’t see borders, just warm smiles and friendly faces. I came home with brochures from each of the counties and plan to create a new section in our Welcome Center called the Lake Hartwell Region.”

I have 3 things to share with you today:
First - The Lake Hartwell Marketing Alliance is hosting the Triple Crown Watercross Competition on Lake Hartwell August 13th through the 15th, at the Big Oaks Recreation Area in Hart County.
On Friday the 13th, each of the 6 counties around the lake is entering a “4-person relay team” and will compete against other “sponsor teams” for the fastest time on the professional watercross race course. The Awards Ceremony and Beach Party is at 4pm.
On Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 4pm - the top U.S. and international competitors will race around obstacles at speeds up to 80 MPH. There is also a Freestyle event with two minute routines of choreographed tricks set to music. There is a beach volleyball tournament, food vendors from each county, an education area for personal watercraft, and a play area for children.
Bleachers will be provided for spectators and will be located on the dam for optimal viewing of the entire ½ mile and ¾ mile course.
Admission to the races and other events is free. There will be a nominal parking fee and shuttle busses will run from the parking area to the venue.

Hello this is Wendi Bailey, your Toccoa-Stephens County Chamber of Commerce President with your Weekly Chamber Update.
I have three things to share with you:
First – We want to assist our CHamber Members in doing everything they can to meet and attract new customers ONLINE. One of our goals this year is to assist members who do not have a web site with getting one to sell their products and services online.
The Chamber had over 10,000 consumers search the online member directory last year. That’s over 850 a month. From the Directory they bounce to our member’s web sites looking for products and services. However, approximately 25% of our members do not have a web site.
Currently, each Chamber member has a FREE marketing account on the web which includes a listing on the directory with a 200-character description of their business, hours of operation, driving directions and eight key words. For additional visibility they can post for FREE an event on the Community Calendar, post a Hot Deal to highlight their weekly specials and post a Job to reach qualified people.
For a FEE they can get even more visibility. Like a business logo next to their online listing and a mini web page with photos, a longer business description, a map link and online advertising spots.
It’s an E World! Let us help you develop a web page for your business and grow your customer base.
Second - The Lake Hartwell Marketing Alliance is hosting a personal watercraft racing tour on Lake Hartwell August 13-15 at the Big Oaks Recreation Area in Hartwell.
The event will feature top U.S. and international competitors racing around obstacles and pounding waves at speeds up to 80 MPH. It is like motocross on water, handle bar-to-handle bar designed to keep competition tight and fans close to the action. It will also feature a Freestyle event with two minute routines of choreographed tricks set to music.
In addition local competitors who have little or no racing experience will also have the chance to compete on the same course. Yes, each of the 6 counties around the lake will place a team on Friday the 13th in the Corporate Challenge and your Chamber President will compete that day.

Finally - Come by the Welcome Center and meet our newest Welcome Center Volunteer Teresa French! We are actively recruiting more Volunteers to work 3 or 6 hour shifts alongside the Museum Volunteers. The hours are Monday through Saturday 10am to 4pm.

Second - The Lake Hartwell Marketing Alliance is hosting a personal watercraft racing tour on Lake Hartwell August 13-15 at the Big Oaks Recreation Area in Hartwell.
The event will feature top U.S. and international competitors racing around obstacles and pounding waves at speeds up to 80 MPH. It is like motocross on water, handle bar-to-handle bar designed to keep competition tight and fans close to the action. It will also feature a Freestyle event with two minute routines of choreographed tricks set to music.
In addition local competitors who have little or no racing experience will also have the chance to compete on the same course. Yes, each of the 6 counties around the lake will place a team on Friday the 13th in the Corporate Challenge and your Chamber President will compete that day.

Finally - Come by the Welcome Center and meet our newest Welcome Center Volunteer Teresa French! We are actively recruiting more Volunteers to work 3 or 6 hour shifts alongside the Museum Volunteers. The hours are Monday through Saturday 10am to 4pm.

2010 Community Branding Survey

The Georgia tourism industry gathered for the 2010 Tourism Day at the Capitol this week to celebrate the significant role tourism plays in Georgia’s economy - as the 2nd largest industry behind agriculture.
The tourism industry presented a BIG check to the state, representing the $850 million generated in state tax revenue, from tourism-related expenditures.
Your Chamber was recognized as one of 41 agencies who received grant funding from the state to promote tourism. Our Tourism Promotion Committee is using that funding to renew the Toccoa-Stephens County brand - for a new County advertising campaign - as well for a new County brochure and postcards.

Toccoa-Stephens County Leadership Team Attends Georgia Chamber Events
The Toccoa-Stephens County Chamber organized a leadership team to attend the January 11-12, 2010 Georgia Chamber Annual Meeting Dinner and Eggs & Issues Breakfast, along with Senator Butterworth and Representative Harden.
At the dinner we heard from keynote speaker, Governor Mike Huchabee who shared his thoughts on national issues including healthcare, education and the federal deficit.
At the breakfast we heard from the Lt. Governor Casey Cagle, the newly elected Speaker of the House David Ralston and Governor SOnny Perdue. They reviewed many of the key challenges the legislators are facing as the 2010 General Assembly gets underway, such as the economy, water, transportation and education.
The leadership group from Toccoa-Stephens County networked with legislators, state agency representatives, and fellow Chamber and Development Authority colleagues to build and sustain relationships and goodwill as well as advance our agenda priorities including Hwy 17 expansion and keeping Traveler's Rest open for visitation.
It was a great opportunity for the leadership team to bond and share our community spirit and pride with key officials.
